Every Hunter & Nomad rug is individually handcrafted from natural cotton fibres, so slight variations in colour, texture and pile height are completely normal and part of what makes each rug unique.
Before washing
- Shake or vacuum your rug to remove loose dirt and dust.
- Treat spills as soon as possible by blotting with a clean cloth.
Everyday Care
- Vacuum regularly using suction only or a soft floor setting. Your
- Avoid rotating brush heads, especially when the rug is new, as they can pull at the cotton fibres.
- Rotate your rug every few months to encourage even wear.
- We recommend using a rug underlay to help prevent slipping and provide extra cushioning.
💡 Good to Know
It is normal for your rug to shed cotton fibre. This will naturally reduce with regular vacuuming and everyday use.
You may also notice a surprising amount of fluff in your vacuum canister. Don't worry - this is completely normal for a handcrafted cotton rug. These are simply loose cotton fibres left from the hand tufting process, not damage or excessive wear. Regular vacuuming will remove these loose fibres, and shedding will naturally reduce over time.
Spot Cleaning
- For everyday spills, act as soon as possible.
- Blot spills with a clean, dry cloth. Do not rub.
- If needed, clean with cold water and a mild detergent.
- Allow the rug to dry completely before placing furniture back on it.
Machine Washing
The following sizes are suitable for most home washing machines with a minimum 8kg capacity:
- 150 cm Round
- 140 × 200 cm
- 160 × 230 cm
If your washing machine is smaller than 8 kg, we highly recommend using a local laundromat with big commercial machines.
Washing Instructions
- Cold gentle cycle (30°C maximum)
- Mild detergent only
- Do not bleach
- Do not use fabric softener
- Take the rug straight out of the washing machine once cycle is done to avoid colour bleeding.
Larger Rugs
Our larger rug sizes can also be washed, however we recommend using a commercial laundromat or professional rug cleaner.
Larger rugs become very heavy once wet and can be difficult for a standard household washing machine to handle safely.
Drying
Our smaller rug sizes can be tumble dried on a low heat setting. This helps fluff the cotton pile and keeps your rug beautifully soft.
Larger rugs should be line dried or dried according to your professional cleaner's recommendations.
Stains
Our rugs are made from natural cotton fibres and are not treated with stain resistant chemicals.
Most everyday spills can be spot cleaned successfully, and because the rugs are fully washable, they're easy to freshen up whenever life gets a little messy.

Yes. Our rugs are designed for real family living. The hand-tufted cotton construction creates a soft surface underfoot while still being durable enough to handle everyday use in bedrooms, living areas and play spaces.
Yes. Our standard rug sizes (140 × 200cm, 160 × 230cm and 150cm round rug) can usually be washed in a household washing machine if the machine capacity allows.
For larger made-to-order rugs, the weight of the rug when wet can be significant. In these cases we recommend using a laundromat with larger machines, professional cleaning, or spot cleaning for everyday mess.

For everyday care, vacuum regularly (avoid strong brush settings). For spills, blot the area gently with a damp cloth and mild detergent. If a deeper clean is needed, the rug can be washed according to the care instructions.
Some light shedding can occur with natural cotton rugs when they are new. This is completely normal for hand-tufted rugs and will reduce over time with regular use and gentle vacuuming.
To help minimise shedding:
• Use a rug underlay to reduce movement and absorb impact
• Vacuum lightly once a week (avoid strong brush settings)
• A gentle cold wash and air dry can also help settle loose fibres
Rugs can develop folds during shipping. These will relax naturally after a short time. Using a rug underlay, placing furniture on the corners, or rolling the rug the opposite way can help speed this up.
