Winter has a way of making you notice every room differently. The light changes, the evenings get longer, and suddenly the rug that felt fine in summer looks like it’s missing something.
The good news: you don’t need to start over. A few considered changes, texture, colour, layering, can shift the whole feeling of a room. This is how we think about winter styling at Hunter and Nomad.
Start With Your Rug
The rug is where winter styling begins. It’s the largest soft surface in most living spaces and kids rooms, and it does more work than most people realise, grounding the space, adding warmth underfoot, and setting the tonal base for everything else in the room.
For winter, look for rugs that carry warmth visually as well as physically. Deeper tones like Sage, Mustard, and Deep Teal hold a room well in cooler months. If your space already has a neutral rug, focus on what surrounds it.
Our Signature Collection rugs the Checker, Gingham, Grid, Scallop and Sport patterns are designed to work as a base, not a statement. They anchor a room without competing with everything else in it.
Layer Without Clutter
Layering is the difference between a room that feels warm and one that just looks warm in photos. In practice, it’s simpler than it sounds.
Start with a rug that works as your base. Then bring in one or two cushions that share a colour from the rug, not a perfect match, just something that connects them. A throw over the arm of the sofa adds softness without effort.
The goal isn’t more. It’s the right things, working together.
If something feels too busy, remove it rather than adding more to compensate.
Chose Colours That Hold
Winter is not the time for very light or very bright. Pale rugs can look cold under grey winter light. Very bold colours can feel heavy when you’re already spending more time inside.
The colours that hold best in winter tend to be mid-tones with warmth in them: Sage, Dusty Coral, Lavender, Blush Pink, Mustard. These shades keep a room feeling calm without going dark.
Sky Blue and Deep Teal work well in rooms that already have warm timber tones or natural materials, the contrast stays grounded rather than cold.
Think About The Floor Plan
A rug that’s too small is one of the most common reasons a room feels off in winter. If your sofa legs are sitting off the rug entirely, the room loses its centre and no amount of cushions will fix that.
As a starting point: in most living rooms, at least the front legs of your sofa should sit on the rug. If you have a larger space, aim for all legs on. It makes the whole seating area feel intentional and complete.
The Simplest Thing To Do
If you’re not ready for anything new, the simplest winter styling move is to edit down. Remove the things that aren’t working and let what’s left breathe. A calm, considered room always feels warmer than a busy one.
And if you’re thinking about a rug, now is a good time. Our EOFY sale is live through June, including 15% off the Signature Collection. These rugs are rarely discounted. Shop here.
Winter styling doesn’t have to mean a full room overhaul. Start with what’s underfoot, work with colour and warmth, and build from there. Keep it simple. Keep it cohesive. That’s the Hunter & Nomad approach.
